A professional chef can work in a wide range of establishments, which differ in terms of customer expectations.

As well as cooking, the role of a chef demands other skills that include menu compilation, working to a budget or expected profit margin, stock storage and control, as well as managing the kitchen crew. Good team performance requires the involvement of other departments to provide the utmost level of comfort to the guests.

In the best restaurants, chefs have to demonstrate their excellence in the preparation and presentation of dishes. Customers expect the chefs to keep on the latest trends and adapt their menu accordingly.

Fashion Technology

Why is this skill so important?

A Fashion technology practitioner designs garments and organises their production process. They can produce made-to-measure clothes in a tailor’s shop or coordinate works in a clothing factory. The essential skills of a Fashion technology practitioner include designing garments according to the newest fashion trends and customer needs, preparing technical and technological documentation, making patterns of garments, selecting materials and accessories, operating sewing machines and equipment.

Another important aspect of work includes the application of standardisation rules for clothing materials and accessories, calculation of garments’ profitability and their functional analysis. All respecting the principles of sustainable development.

Practical knowledge of the clothes design and scaling procedures, combined with fluency in cutting, sewing and specialist computer programmes, gives the Fashion Technology practitioners a huge range of possibilities. Creativity, artistic bent, ability to design unique and original garments, craftsmanship in making garments seen during fashion shows or approved for manufacture in a clothing factory, is every Fashion Technology practitioner’s dream come true.

Why is this skill so important?

A florist needs to display creative skills and business acumen. Apart from the sense of style and ability to create aesthetic and perfect compositions, excellent interpersonal skills when dealing with clients are indispensable.

Flowers and other botanical materials are very fragile, prone to damage and have a limited lifespan. Dealing with such delicate material, a florist must respect its beauty and nature, putting specialist knowledge on effective sourcing, purchase and storage of plants to good effect.

Design of floral work, whether it a small bouquet or a large thematic installation for a major event, requires from a florist to be creative, up-to-date with the market trends and fashion, and to be able to read customer needs. The design should be innovative, practical and profitable. When creating a unique composition, it is always of the utmost importance for any experienced florist to emphasise the exceptional beauty of flowers.


Why is this skill so important?

Mechatronics technicians design, build, maintain and repair automated equipment. They also program equipment control systems, to enable communication between humans and machines.

Mechatronics technicians also deal with equipment for gathering information, components and regulators. More commonly used and known mechatronics equipment can be observed in shops (cash register and conveyor units) as well as production halls (automated bottling equipment).

Mechatronics systems used in the industry include automated production lines with assembly, packing, filling, labelling and testing stations, automated distribution and logistics systems.

CNC Milling

Why is this skill so important?

Nearly all what we see or use today has been manufactured using the CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technology: cars, planes, components of all kinds of machines, tool moulds, implants and prostheses, mobile phones, toys. Every one of these objects contains elements manufactured on the CNC machines.

CNC milling machines are programmed using a computer code. The code transfers control instructions to the milling machine, used for the shaping of metals and other solid materials into specific forms. The operating precision of the machines is as high as 5 micrometres – the thickness of the wall of a soap bubble.

A CNC machine operator programmes and operates the machine by writing programs, entering adjustments to the machining process, precisely positioning a pre-machined part. As a programmer, she/he is responsible for reading complex technical drawings and generating machining programs, based on the technological process or drawings.

The CNC milling machine operator monitors the functioning of the machine and the work of its tool during the entire process, paying special attention to their efficiency and performance. The CNC machines have displaced conventional systems in the industry, increasing the productivity and repeatability of production and, consequently, making our cars, planes and other equipment more reliable, and their production more effective. Higher precision makes it possible to meet all and any customer requirements, like the right roughness of surface or a tiny design detail.

The most skilled operators always aim for the optimal performance and production quality.


Why is this skill so important?

A welder interprets engineering drawings and trade symbols in order to prepare and join a range of metals of various grade and gauges using arc welding processes.

Professional welders need to be able to operate various types of welding equipment and must possess sound knowledge about the welding processes, metal metallurgy and arc welding, to be able to select a welding method which is most suitable for the joined materials. They also must have a sound understanding of the safe methods of work and personal protection equipment.

The range of skills of an expert welder is as wide, as wide is the selection of industries a welder can work in, including civil engineering, mechanical engineering, transport, maritime engineering and construction. A welder can work in various industries and different plants, from small factories up to shipyards, power stations, petrochemical plants and drilling platforms or the widely understood offshore installations.

Nowadays, a welding expert can specialise in many welding processes and integrate various welding environments from all over the world to transfer the knowledge onto a local market.

Modern welding processes are used in all the mentioned branches of industry. Automated welding processes become more and more common not only in the automotive industry, characterised by high process repeatability, but also in the shipbuilding industry.

Why is this skill so important?

Mobile Robotics is a field of industry related to the design and manufacture of mobile robots used in areas as diverse as manufacturing, agriculture, aerospace, mining and medicine.

A mobile robotics engineer designs and maintains robots, develops new applications and conducts research to expand the potential for robots’ use.

Mobile robots begin with projects requirements and functional description, then a design and prototype are made. The built robot is then programmed and tested, to make sure it offers a continuous level of performance.

In order to design robots suitable for their intended use, mobile robotics engineers must be familiar with logic, microprocessors and computer programming. They prepare specifications of robot’s capabilities and are responsible for design, cost calculations and quality control. The ability to innovate and experiment, a capacity for analysis as well as ability to generate solutions meeting various technological challenges, are critical skills in this profession.

Why is this skill so important?

The process of modelling building information provides continuous and instantaneous access to information about projects, costs and time schedules.

It simplifies the design process by making it possible to test different variants and schemes in virtual world, to select the optimal solution. The test results are coherent and reliable, because the reality is better reflected by one digital model. The same model is used for making project decisions, developing a consistent construction documentation, making profitability analyses as well as estimating investment costs and, eventually, managing the building.

Because everybody works on the same model, companies involved in the design, construction and building management processes can significantly increase their efficiency and reduce the number of errors in the entire documentation preparation process. Digital project data, combined with innovative parametric information modelling technology, offer substantial advantages when compared to traditional design and construction methods.

The BIM processes allow the architects and constructors to precisely specify not only the architecture, construction and internal layout of the building, but also its future behaviour.
